Tattoo Care: It's More Than Aftercare, It's Skin Care.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it's also cool to put pictures on.

I can assume that's probably why you're here though. But the reality is, most people will invest large amounts of money into their tattoos, but not invest the time into maintaining their skin prior to the tattoo.

Aftercare is crucial, but so is pre-care. If you buy a canvas that's been sitting in the sun and dried out, and you try to paint on it, you can almost guarantee that it's gonna give you a bunch of grief. Your skin is the exact same, except with even more possible complications.

I'm gonna walk you through a pre-care regiment to help you show up to your session with your skin ready to not only endure the tattoo process, but also heal faster, and stay brighter longer.

Step 1: Exfoliate!

One of the best ways to start the process is to get rid of all the dead dry skin on the top layer of the dermis. If we have to break through this layer of dead skin before getting pigment into the skin, the tattoo will not only take longer, but it will make getting clean lines and smooth blends a more difficult task.

Take a nice hot bath or shower to soften up that top layer of dead skin. You can utilize an exfoliating scrub, or an exfoliating skin brush to remove the dead skin.

Follow this up by applying lotion to help hydrate the skin.

Step 2: Lotion!

The next step is to apply lotion throughout the day, focusing on the area you're looking to get tattooed. Do this consistently leading up to your appointment. I reccomend an unscented lotion, preferably the same lotion you will be using during aftercare. This will ensure that your skin is healthy and hydrated and easy to tattoo, and you will also know well in advance if your skin has any issues with the lotion.

The easier your skin is to tattoo, the quicker your tattoo can be applied. Meaning less trauma!

Step 3: Hydrate!

Make sure you're well hydrated on the day of your appointment, this will help every aspect of the tattoo process, and plus you're a human, humans need water.

Following these steps will make your tattoo session easier on you, as well as on your artist!
